The Christ the King Prayer Band Organization was founded in 1972 by Sister Barbara Rhaming under Fr. Murillo Bonaby with The Right Rev. Bishop Michael Eldon as head of the Diocese of The Bahamas, and the Turks and Cacos Islands. It became the first Prayer Band in the Anglican Diocese in the Bahamas. Its’ 1st. president was the late Sister Della Knowles from1972 to 1984. After her demise, the baton was passed on to Sister Marjorie Thompson who served untiringly with great dedication for a few years. She was succeeded by Sister Inez Frazer who served for less than a year before her untimely demise. Sister Menera Gay acted as president until election was called the following year when Mrs. Thompson was re-elected. She served until 2008 when she relinquished her position. She was succeeded by Sister Rose Rolle who continued the work of the Prayer Band until January of 2011.
The Prayer Band Organization, though few in numbers, keeps weekly meetings, visits the bereaved, sick and shut- ins of the parish, visits the Geriatrics Hospital, Good Samaritan Home and Unity House for the Aged. They praise God through songs, prayers and Bible readings. They also take along love gifts for the confined. Other activities of the Prayer Band include Prayer Breakfast, Healing Services, annual Souse Out, visitation to other churches during their anniversary, meetings at the seaside, and co-operative worship on the second Sunday of each month. Their uniform is a white attire with red hat, shoes and corsage, except during the Lenten season, when they adorn ourselves in all white.
In January 2011, I, Mazie Poitier, was unanimously elected as President of the Prayer Band. In addition to the activities listed above, the president and officers have formulated a Strategic Plan with a Vision, Mission Statement, Goals, Objectives, Strategy and Performance Indicator.
Their Motto: EACH ONE, REACH ONE FOR THE KINGDOM AND GLORY OF GOD.
The Prayer Band members are encouraged to become Women of Valour- To find their purpose and feed their souls through daily and cooperate Bible Study, constant prayers, attending workshops and conferences, being true disciples of Christ, respecting self and authority, freely giving of time and treasure-tithing, to celebrate life in all its’ splendor by loving self and allowing God to do the rest.
The Prayer Band held their first Prayer Conference, in 2011, their theme being.”The Awesome Power of God is revealed through Prayer, Praise and Worship” Their Guest Presenters were: Minister Carnetta Ferguson and Rev. Canon Neil Roach. They recently introduced prayers in the Sacristy during the Sacrament of Holy Communion, and also during invitational altar calls. A Prayer Request Box and Memory Verse Basket were blessed and commissioned during their anniversary service in April 2011. The organization also aim to bridge the generational gap with various activities, develop invitational tracts, and pull down strong holds of the devil through prayer and fasting. They have established a Royal Telephone Prayer and Praise Line. Cooperate worship is now held the first Sunday of each month at which time prayers of covering is offered for the entire church for the rest of the month.. We seek to, continue, with the help of the Communication Ministry, to record some of our services for our sick and shut in members.
